Our client had lived in her property for over 10 years and during that time had unable to decide how best to deal with her typical, plain 'housebuilder' garden consisting of a small
patio that was not big enough for a table & chairs and a large lawn and few areas for planting. In addition, the house and garden had been constructed on a chalk based site and had very little soil for growing any plants (see our construction pictures for the chalk!)
Our design for the garden centred on a larger paved area laid in random pattern sandstone flags, with castellated edges allowing for planting around the patio to soften the edges. As the garden sloped up away from the house, we constructed a retaining wall of vertical sleepers embedded in a concrete footing, with offset steps up to the main lawn area where a secondary circular seating area was constructed at the top of the garden to make the best use of the early morning sun and give an area to be used for 'coffee and Sunday paper reading'
As or client is a keen plants woman, the rest of the garden would be made up of deep planting areas with plants to encourage as much wildlife into the garden as possible.
