Our client was in the process of having a new conservatory constructed in what was already a small garden and needed us to create a new garden area that was low maintenance and could be used for entertaining & barbecues, with small covered utility area that would conceal their unsightly wheelie bins.
After the conservatory was constructed, the clients were going to be left with a space that was around 5m x 5m, so we designed a decked garden with the central feature of a large ench made from railway sleepers, surrounded by a series of small raised sleeper beds to give defined areas of planting, that could also double as extra seating if required. To give the illusion of more space in the garden, we laid the decking on a 45 degree angle to draw the eye along the longest lines of the garden.
To ensure the garden could be used at night, we installed a series of small LED lights into the decking, installed uplighters into raised beds to highlight the plants and we also put some lights under the sleeper bench to give a cool glow that makes the bench appear to float at night.
As the sleeper bench faces the bin store, we built an attractive structure, with a solid roof, faced with trellis, so that a climber planted in a copper planter could grow up the trellis and assist in concealing the bins.
Finally, the fences were given a coat of cool green paint to brighten up the garden.
